Acupuncture, constipation, pregnancy, Gold CoastAcupuncture can be very helpful in relieving constipation during pregnancy. Constipation during pregnancy is thought to be due to increased production of hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone softening and relaxing the smooth muscle of the digestive tract leading to sluggish bowel movements.  Early on in pregnancy, morning sickness may exacerbate this problem as it can sabotage the best of intentions and lead to a diet low in fibre.  Additionally, some women may be reluctant to keep up with increased fluid demands due to increased urinary frequency, causing stools to be dry and difficult to pass.  In later pregnancy, constipation can occur due to the pressure placed on the bowel from the enlarging uterus.  Iron supplements often given during pregnancy can also have the unwelcome side effect of constipation.  A diet high in fibre, including plenty of fruits, seeds and whole grains, and having at least 6-8 glasses of room temperature water daily are simple ways to help address this issue. Taking a cup of hot prune juice or lemon juice in hot water half an hour before meals can also help.  Acupuncture works to address any underlying imbalances contributing to your constipation, and in conjunction with dietary interventions can be very helpful in getting things moving again.
